Helping people with computers. one answer at a time.

I just created a new user account on my computer. Why do some of the programs not show up on the new account? Is there a way to get them to appear? I tried reinstalling, but I got a message that the program was already installed.
•
When you install a program, quite often one of the questions it will ask youis whether you want to install for the current user only, or for all users.
In other words, exactly what you're asking about.
The question is what if the setup doesn't ask, or what if you selected 'currentuser only' . can you still use the software when signed into a different user account?
The existing app should be un-installed by going to settings- Apps.you may find the message that 'this application is not installed for this user'. Such apps can not be installed in the current user. If that is the case then, change the user/profile and then try to uninstall the app. I have mac.com Apple IDs. I maintain them both, one for my accounts with Apple, such as here for the ASC. The other for my iTunes/Mac App Store content. It's not difficult. Just because the user name is a defunct mac.com email address doesn't mean that you can't update the primary email associated with the Apple ID to a functioning email address. Those apps not installed from App Store, like Safari, Calendar, Notes, Messages, etc. Are not supported to delete in this way: Enter Launchpad, or click on F4 on the keyboard.
Unfortunately, it's that all too common answer:
Maybe.
Let's look at some of the possibilities.
How to uninstall default apps on Mac with Terminal. Despite the warning, it is possible to remove unnecessary standard programs via Terminal. But first, you should know that with the release of macOS 10.12 Apple has made changes in its security technology System Integrity Protection (SIP) and it now forbids modifying system items on Macs. The SIP limits the actions that the user can perform on.
The difference between installing for all users and installing for thecurrent user only typically boils down to where the setup program places the shortcuts forthe program, where it places any directories or support files, and possibly wherewithin the registry it places program settings. It all depends on the specificprogram being installed (hence the 'maybe'), and some programs will have moredifferences, and some will have fewer.
For example, if you take a look at 'c:documents and settings' on your WindowsXP installation, you'll see at least two directories: one with your user name, and one with the name 'All Users'. Dig a little deeper, and you'll see a 'Start Menu' itembeneath each of those. The start menu you see is the result of Windows displaying the contents of both of those: the contents of 'c:documents and settingsall usersstart menu'and 'c:documents and settings--your user name--start menu' are merged and displayedas the system start menu. So if a program's shortcut appears in the 'all users' portion, then it'll show up for everyone. If it's only in one specific user name, then only thatuser will see the shortcut. Similar, though not identical, concepts apply to theregistry and other items in within 'documents and settings'.
The point of all that is that when a program is installed, it needs to decidewhere to put its information: either in 'all users', or in a user specific section. Sometimesit asks, sometimes it assumes, and sometimes it assumes wrong.
So, what to do? If you're logged in as user 'A', and want to accessprograms that are only visible to user 'B', here are some ideas to try:
- Re-install the program, and, for programs that do so, select 'All Users' when it asks whom tomake the program available to. You might need to be logged in as administratorto make this work, and you might need to uninstall it first (afterbacking up any data you might need to preserve, of course).
- Install the program as user 'A'. Some setup programs are smartenough to realize that they're already installed for another user, and willsimply then add the appropriate settings for the current user.
- Copy a shortcut from user 'B'. For example, user 'B' will probablyhave a shortcut to the program in their start menu:
'c:documents and settingsBstart menuprogramsapplication nameshortcut'.Copy that shortcut to an equivalant position in user A's menu:
'c:documents and settingsAstart menuprogramsapplication nameshortcut'. - Manually add a shortcut to the program. This actually works ina surprising number of cases, mostly smaller programs and utilities. Locate the installed program (for example somewherein 'c:program files' might be a directory for the application, and withinthat, the '.exe' that is the application), and create a shortcut tothat program on your start menu.
- Create another user, 'C' and use that. Some programs simply cannotbe used by multiple users. It's infrequent, but it happens. So uninstall it(again, after preserving any data you need to save), and then create a thirduser that users 'A' and 'B' can share to use the program. Yes, it's a pain, because they'll have to log out, or switch users, in order to access the program. But it's better than nothing. Sort of.
Unfortunately, these ideas will not work for all programs. For example, manually creating or copying a shortcut may bypass additional setup steps that some applications require. How to download fifa 19 mac.
The reason that there's no blanket answer is that setting up an application can befairly complex, and it really is up to themanufacturers of the specific applications to 'do the right thing'.Not only is 'the right thing' subject to interpretation, many don'tdo it even when it is clear. So a final suggestion is, of course, to contact themanufacturer of the package you're having issues with and ask if they havea recommended approach to the issue.

What do you do if the program does not ask you if you want to set it up for current user or all users?
LeoAugust 26, 2005 8:08 PM
Try installing it once logged in as each user. If that doesn't work, then you really have no recourse other than to talk to the manufacturer of the software.

Leo,
I'm a computer consultant and I was 'cleaning' a computer infected with Viruses and Spyware. I inadvertantly deleted HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersionWinlogonuserinit.exe
When I rebooted, I could not log in. The welcome screen appeared and when I clicked on the user name it would automatically log me out. At that point I realized I had made a mistake. I was able to find a MS Knowledge base article that helped me restore some default registry settings that eventually let me log back in. My problem is that now, all the programs that were installed like Norton AV, Word Perfect, and a few others will not run and are not shown in the Add/Remove Programs list, although they are still in the C:Program Files.

To be honest, in your situation I would attempt a repair install of Windows. It's hard to say at this point exactly what's been corrupted given those symptoms. The repair may be the best alternative. Unfortunately, failing that, my next step would be a regular reinstall.

I have used the 'run as' admin option to install an application on a users computer. I selected the current user option and I now want to remove this application. The problem is the user does not have enough rights to remove the application and the application does not show up in add/remove programs while logged in as administrator. Is mac cleaner a virus.

The article mentions copying the shortcut from user A to user B's Start Menu. You can also move the shortcut from user A to the All Users programs folder in the Start Menu.

RemoteAlgorithm is marketed online as a dignified Mac application/browser tool that is capable of enhancing user’s online browsing experience. Even with these offered benefits and improvements, the Mac security analyst asserts that total confidence should not be given to this dubious program, since there are numerous similar browser extensions with a malicious purpose. Actually, looking at the designated icon, it is obvious that the RemoteAlgorithm app is a previously deployed adware adaptation. It is comparable to IndexerInput, LaunchSystem, and any other browser threats from the same group.
RemoteAlgorithm is PUA
All browser extensions assumed to be mentioned are listed in the potentially unwanted applications (PUA) category. RemoteAlgorithm app and its variations are often installed on Mac computers without the user’s agreement. This pervasive infiltration is how it penetrates Mac OS most of the time. Even with the latest releases, adware creators never adjust the distribution scheme and often, they use the deceitful software bundling trick to gain illegal access to the Mac user’s computer.
Misleading advertising method is another tactic that makers of RemoteAlgorithm use to roll out the adware and attain its world wide deployment. Mac users generally see such pop-up ads during a visit to suspicious websites particularly those that are publishing illegal copies of copyrighted objects (software, music, videos).
RemoteAlgorithm is an Adware
Once downloaded and installed, RemoteAlgorithm’s only goal is to earn revenue by displaying unusual type of ads. It can also install other unwanted software onto the computer as the adware is also involved in pay-per-install scheme. This means that actors behind the RemoteAlgorithm will receive the appropriate percentage from each participating software they install on the Mac computer.
Money is definitely the basic reason why cyber crooks continue on spreading the malicious browser extension like RemoteAlgorithm. So you should never let this kind of suspicious application to install itself on an internet software as Safari, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. Instant deletion is suggested to avoid further damage on Mac OS and restore the browser to its normal state. Please refer to the following section for the complete removal guide.
